A special series that take you behind the design of our 'Power and Competition' research report covers. From the militarisation of the Arctic Circle to Chinese state interference in UK universities - there's a lot to explore. Foreign Affairs Healthcare Education Technology & Innovation Energy & Environment Economy & Finance Justice & Human rights Foreign Affairs. 'Breaking the Ice' The research in the foreign affairs report covers the race for the Arctic Circle, and what can be done to slow it.The cover started life in a very similar form - the text would be displaced by the ice. What changed over time was the overall simplicity. We went from images of cracking ice with the same big bold font, to what you see on the cover: a much more simplistic, but undeniably clear, representation of the sea ice that features in the research. Healthcare. How the patient-physician dynamic changes when we pay for healthcare The research in the healthcare report covers the patient physician dynamic, and how it varies from public to private systems. The cover was always going to be about the public private distinction, therefore the receipt format was chosen. We decided to play around with the text that when to the receipt - landing on the final form which asks 'what does paying get you?'. The American system, featured in the research also heavily informed the text we added - "bankruptcy" "premiums" and "debt" are prominent features of the receipt, just as they are in the private American system. Education. Foreign state interference The research in the education report focuses on the increasing interference in the UK's higher education system by the Chinese Communist Party. This cover had multiple iterations, beginning with a Chinese flag obscuring the big bold text seen in the final design. Other designs slowly moved away from a flag and evolving into a heavily redacted paragraph of text. It evokes the more traditional way we view interference - selective viewpoints that narrow what we are taught, the final dark colour set applied evokes the chilling effect the research uncovers. Technology & Innovation. The Future of Computing... is all to play for The research in the Technology & Innovation report focuses on the increasing reliance the world has on a an ever shrinking product - computer chips (3nm chips are on their way to your smartphone soon). These chips come from a very concentrated part of the world, Asia - more specifically Taiwan. Taiwan, the self governing island claimed by China under the 'One China' policy is a global chip superpower. As a result the West and China are slowly fighting for supremacy in chips, AI and quantum computing. The cover began with a heavily cropped image of one of the chips everyone has come to rely on. It quickly evolved from an image to a illustrated design of the chips. Energy & Environment. Insecurity and proxy competition in the ME The research in the Energy & Environment report focuses on events in the Middle East. The region is under increasing strain, facing heatwaves coupled with a lack of water supply. For the cover it was interesting to just print the title of the research in a bold font, but this wasn't enough. After a while the colours and the addition of layered and less focused text brought the internal research into focus. It mirrors the fading of resources, while the land is barren and the reduced colour spectrum helps indicate such. Economy & Finance. Tariffs, Tariffs, Tariffs The research in the Economy & Finance report focuses on global trade, for this focus the report honed in on the Australia-China trade conflict. The idea behind the cover was simple and the first to be finished (taking the least amount of time to complete) - it evokes the idea of trade and what happens when trade barriers and friction begin to take hold between two countries. The wall of 'stickers' illustrates the speed at which these conflicts balloon. Almost as if two people had stood and slapped more and more stickers in retaliation to the other doing exactly the same. Justice & Human rights. Trafficking in Sex, Organs and Labour The research in the Justice & Human rights report is poignant, for this cover we had to think about how to best represent a topic like this. The idea behind the cover was to simply strip the cover of as much as possible creating a powerful cover to match the detailed research inside the report. We chose to place only the preamble on the cover - its powerful and speaks to the critical policy work that needs to be taken to solve such a damaging problem. Behind the cover (s) December reports This year Warwick think tank published 7 different reports covering foreign affairs, healthcare, education, tech & innovation, energy & environment, economy & finance, and justice and human rights. This series gives a look at the process behind each report cover and how they fit the dedicated and detailed research inside each report. Foreign affairs The impact of institutions on perpetuating neo-colonial inequalities and inaccessibility in the 21st century This cover follows the story of the United N ations and the security council which convenes with five permanent members. The cover started out with crops of five different flags each one representing a member of the permanent five but ultimately the cover lacked a distinct focus to the UN as an institution. So eventually the cover image was selected, one of the UN HQ itself. The challenge with a photo like this is its not designed for a cover, to overcome this problem unique crops were applied to the image. What you see is the building centring in the foreground with the text fitting around somewhat representing the inflexibility of the institution. It's an image crop that really draws the reader to look at the UN. Healthcare An examination of the socio-economic inequalities impeding effective female cancer care The healthcare cover follows female cancer care and how medicine today is still letting women down when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. From the outset it was clear this cover would focus on the female role in healthcare. The cover takes a stethoscope and transforms the focus to female-centric care, with the addition of the symbol. Sometimes simplicity works best creating a powerful graphic to lead the reader into the amazing research done by the research team. Education Inequality within the British Education regime and the creation of a meritocratic education system Again this cover takes an image and places it on the cover. Along with crops, treatments can be applied to images to better place the image on a cover design. The image treatment here helps depict the distortion that is being seen in the education system and side the classroom. Tech & Innovation Case Study: Does all new technology worsen inequality The cover follows the involvement of emerging technologies in inequalities. The tech report gravitated towards the central theme of blockchain and crypto. The text and colours are applied in a deliberate way to mimic the code that will go into creating the future technologies that will power the global financial system. The reader gets to assess whether the cover is foreboding or not. Energy & Environment The inequalities perpetuated by climate change Climate change is likely to be the defining issue of the next decade, this report looks at how it's shifting inequalities around the globe and how and if countries can combat the effects. The image pick for the cover is really resounding, simply a globe, it had many iterations but ultimately the cover ended up being a singular image with a simple treatment applied, one that highlights the Southern Hemisphere . Economy & Finance Assessing the successes and limitations of Microfinance programmes, and providing measures to increase the efficacy of these institutions. The economy and finance report looks at money, specifically what happens when small amounts of money are leant to individuals who don't have access to credit through banks and other institutions. From the outset it was clear what the cover was going to focus on, the central tenet: money. The eventual image that appears on the cover is a really tight detail of a bank note. The eventual crop is one which draws the reader to the piece focusing on the eye and detailing seen up close. Other additions such as the font colours and other text details add to the resemblance and texture of a bank note. Justice & Human Rights Unequal Treatment of refugees: A crisis for the 21st century For he justice and human rights cover the text relays the bold statement highlighted by the research. Along with the sizeable portion of the cover taken up with text the image selected speaks to the harsh conditions refugees face, even before entering the final country where work and healthcare are often remote possibilities. The remoteness of the image demonstrates such isolation. With increased division of labour along with the internationally distributed supply chains, they have led to a global phenomenon of production and shipping, which has in turn increased global economic connectivity. It can be best exemplified by the robust supply chain of Apple Inc. - where the touch ID is created in Taiwan, accelerometer in Germany, assembled in Czech Republic and finally sold in the Indian markets. Similarly, numerous companies around the world have set up production hubs in different parts of the world to exploit the comparative advantages of the regions in order to create ingenious products. However, the increasing political tensions such as trade wars, terrorist attacks and armed conflicts over the world pose a threat towards increased economic integration. The interconnections between politics, economy and financial markets have been studied over a long period of time - much of the recent literature represents a clear heterogeneity between them. Some international security events driven by political conflicts have adversely affected the financial markets – in some cases, even leading to them shutting down for multiple days – while some have not affected the markets. In this report, we aim to highlight the effects of international power dynamics on the economy and financial markets, followed by a meta-analysis of effects of drastic international events on the markets and a case study on Australia and China. READ THE REPORT > iPhone: The global supply chain in action See how just one part is made The sensor is created in Taiwan The accelerometer in Germany The unit is assembled in Czech Republic before being shipped and sold to the market in India Foreign affairs Arctic The The Arctic currently faces multiple issues that are complicated in their reasons and solutions. To create meaningful solutions, policymakers have to isolate these complex causes and design targeted solutions. Military escalations in the arctic have so far not been hugely alarming, but are steadily increasing. By way of both military investment by Arctic states and aggressive rhetoric by leaders. These escalations, more often than not, are prompted by events miles from the Arctic region and take place on the global geopolitical arena, but have clear implications in the polar region. Moreover, there exists no Arctic-specific treaty addressing territorial disputes or other Arctic-specific issues. Instead, nations rely on the ill-suited UNCLOS for guidance, which leaves ample scope for future escalations. Finally, the melting ice is opening up faster and more efficient trade routes. As shipping companies seek to exploit this opportunity, equally important is creating a framework that ensures safety in this period of increased maritime navigation. READ THE REPORT > Circle 3 The number of Russian nuclear submarines that smashed through the arctic ice sheet in a first of its kind manoeuvre in 2021 28 The number of nations taking part in the largest NATO exercise within the artic circle. See how UNCLOS could change the race for the arctic Education Chinese State Interference in the British Higher Education System The aim of this report is to lift the lid on the extent of Chinese interference in the UK higher education system and to suggest ways of resolving the problem. The UK is famed around the world for its leading universities, and for its role in research and education. A key principle underpinning higher education is academic freedom. The ability to express and share ideas freely in an open and safe environment is not only a human right but the key to achieving meaningful progress in academia. However, mounting evidence is revealing that this fundamental principle is being eroded by a state whose ambitions and motives run counter to the interests and values of British universities and Britain as a whole. We live in a world of increasing educational interdependence and cooperation, which manifests in a variety of ways, such as exchange programmes, international research agreements, and common access to intellectual material. However, reports of espionage and illicit interference in academia have become more prevalent, particularly in nations such as Australia, the US, and the UK. Our report focuses on the growing trend of interference and malpractice by authoritarian regimes in the UK. This report is most levelled at the acts of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), in particular, its growing involvement in the censorship and theft of academic content. But also its use of violence and exploitation of legal powers to limit the activities of students and academics who attempt to uncover and release the truth. We should be clear that in our report we do not seek to blame Chinese students or staff for this. We actively embrace the benefits of a truly international academic community, which includes everything China has to offer. READ THE REPORT > Find out about a new agency dedicated to education protection Healthcare 30million The number of Americans without health insurance -- (9.2% of the population) The complex commoditised American system involves Premiums Deductibles Co - pays + unexpected bills __________________ makes medical debt the no.1 source of debt + bankruptcy in the US The Physician-Patient dynamic is typically overlooked and not something many pay attention to even though it affects the treatment and the reactions that you receive when seeking aid. However, the different systems are generally there to better the responses for the patients, hence the need to have a deeper understanding and raise awareness for the better communication and understanding of the dynamic to then help improve the systems more generally. North America, as a continent, has a vast variety in its systems. For example, the US has a private system compared to Canada, where there is a free health care system, making it different from the way that the dynamics work. Through the briefing, we will begin by giving an overview of both of the systems and the way that they work, and the way that they impact the patients as a whole. We will then delve into the role of international institutions to have a look at the way that they affect the role in protecting patients, moving from a focus on North America and looking at the wider image of the world and its role in the way that patients do/ do not get aid. READ THE REPORT > Justice and Human Rights Human Trafficking in sex labour and organs This report will highlight the worldwide issue of human trafficking, which especially plagues underdeveloped countries in Africa and Asia. We will look at three key areas: sex trafficking, forced labour and organ trafficking. We focus our report on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as human trafficking is a particularly problematic issue here; it allows us to analyse human trafficking in greater depth. This briefing section gives an overview of the key issues in the aforementioned three areas, summarising their key causes, consequences and significance. We shall then proceed to provide more detailed insights. READ THE REPORT > Sex trafficking victims are discouraged from filing reports through coercion 73% of the DRC population live in extreme poverty The majority of victims in sex trafficking are women and girls Victims of organ trafficking face a life of poor health afterwards, as they are vulnerable to disease There are numerous armed groups in the DRC that used forced labour to gain profit, particularly in the mining industry Those leaving Africa for Europe are highly vulnerable Energy and Environment RESOURCE INESCURITY AND PROXY COMPETITION This section begins by providing an overview of the current state of Middle Eastern geopolitics in relation to its key resource - oil. Through giving this account of how the region’s oil-rich status has come to shape its influence, a strong understanding can be gained of the ways in which both regional and global trends stand to interfere with this influence and the global standing of the Middle East. The political and strategic import of oil has been fundamental in defining the region’s political significance and its relations with other regions and countries. The Middle East faces high levels of resource insecurity which are only expected to worsen in scope and severity as demand is projected to increase. A global shift in focus away from fossil fuels towards renewable sources of energy stands to re-define, and potentially threaten, the long-standing geopolitical significance of the Middle East READ THE REPORT > 2x The demand for electricity is set to double by 2050 in the Middle East -50% per capita water availability is set to half by the year 2050 by 2100 Super Heatwaves around 600m could face these Heatwaves yearly Ultra-extreme and See the December reports Learn more

01 The structure of international institutions places an inherent emphasis upon neo-colonial practices, and the rigid nature of these systems creates a path dependency that curtails the possibility of decreases in inequality and increases of accessibility within these arenas. It is also worth noting that economic inequalities for the most part have a cyclical relationship with neo- colonial inequalities where some neo-colonial practices promote development in social collectives that largely side and account for such practices, while those that are averse face an ostracisation on the global level thereby receding development rates and deepening inequalities not only within countries but also across borders. Read the report > New York, The United Nations The General Assembly, The Security Council with the P5, five permanent members, the US, China, Russia, UK and France convenes here 02 Read the report > Our aim is to give an overview of the current gaps in the health sector with regards to female cancer care. Due to the changes in the global healthcare systems, in particular due to the pandemic, there are major delays and flaws in the plan that was made in line with the long term plan that the NHS created in 2019, for example. Similarly, on a much larger level, the plans made by WHO are outdated as the predictions were from the perspective of progression before the pandemic. Therefore, one of the main areas that we look at is the way that COVID-19 has impacted the progression of female cancer care. We look at the different factors that have impacted cancer care overtime and the need of understanding these overlooked areas in more detail to show what a massive impact it is having in general. For example, we have the socio-economic background of the individual, the race or ethnicity of the individual, the gender identity of the individual and age all have an impact in the cancer care provided to individuals. The percentage of respondents reported either not receiving, or not being aware of, their care plans 03 Read the report > The aim of this report is to identify the reasons why the British education system continues to be unmeritocratic and to suggest ways of resolving this problem. Meritocracy is the principle that no matter your background, everyone should have an equal chance of succeeding in life. That success is solely based on effort, ability, and hard work. Ultimately, structural forces don’t hold people back. Equality of opportunity has to be the cornerstone of a fair society. We believe that the education system plays a fundamental role in this area. The aim of education is to prepare children for the adult world. With the increasing importance of qualifications, success in life is dependent on success in education. However, as the evidence shows, there are factors in society that prevent some children from achieving, of no fault of their own. Of children with parents of higher professionals gained 5 or more A*-C GCSEs Of children with parents of routine workers gained 5 or more A*-C GCSEs 04 The percentage of Americans that would one day be inclined to use genetic-editing tech to prevent children inheriting incurable diseases like cystic fibrosis Technological innovation is the force upon which capitalism and the global economy is built. It has allowed humanity to escape the Malthusian Trap and in the last century alone has lifted billions of people out of poverty and unalterably changed the world. Yet from the mid 20th century until now, outstanding innovation has been paired with a historic rise in inequality; through the exploration of three 21st century technologies: Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain, AI, and Genome Editing we will explore the question of whether technological innovation necessarily leads to a rise in inequality. Read the report > BLOCKCHAIN & CRYPTO Have the potential to democratise the ownership of stable assets, reduce transaction costs and give free access to the financial system to those around the world Read the report > 05 This section takes an in-depth look at the relationship between climate change and inequality - arguably two of the most significant challenges facing the world in the 21st century. Through an examination of the way in which climate change exacerbates economic inequalities within nations, as well as inequality on a global scale, this briefing sheds light on the unequal distribution of the risks and consequences of climate change. Developing nations and economically disadvantaged groups within nations face a disproportionately high risk of being hit by the adverse consequences of climate change. Lower-income individuals and poorer global economies suffer as a result of the disproportionately high burden of the costs of climate change - costs that have arisen both historically and in the modern day. There are extensive emission inequalities found between nations which has consequences for the nature of the distribution of responsibility for climate change. 06 Microfinance by definition is the activity of lending small amounts of money to individuals who do not have access to credit through other conventional financial institutions such as banks or fintechs. To start with, capital access is limited due to collateral requirements which can’t be met by people below the poverty line as numerous formal financial institutions find it difficult to serve such risks. However this serves as a mere preface to the problem at hand. This report is therefore divided into two overall sections that address both, the limitations and the successes of microfinance institutions in alleviating inequalities. Read the report > This first section of the report is a brief introduction to the topics being discussed in the report in which some evidence will be demonstrated to investigate potential impacts of microfinance. The briefing will explain the main points that later sections will discuss according to the team’s main findings. Each of the subtopics below will contain subtopics with action statements and evidence to support said statements in order to introduce the reader to the initial part of the research conducted. 1. Why do we need Microfinance? 2. How access to credit can prove itself as an aid to helping individuals with low incomes. 3. The use of Microfinance to assist female borrowers 4. Microfinance as a potential help for people inside stateless conditions. 5. Some of the challenges faced by Microfinance Institutions (MFI) 6. Investigating weather or not microlending by itself is enough to alleviate poverty and some evidence that points to some issues in the industry. Read the report > This briefing note will provide details of some of the topics explored that represent some of the difficulties faced by Microfinance Institutions including some of the things that increase their interest rates and some of the dangers that default risks carry. Secondly, we will discuss the main points regarding Microfinance’s limited impact in alleviating poverty. Theory behind MFIs high interest rates and difficulties in exploiting economies of scale. 1. Case study of the Indian microfinance crisis in 2010. 2. Variables that increase default probability in a case study in Bolivia and Colombia. 3. Some research suggests that microfinance has not been as successful in alleviating poverty as some people may think This report will highlight the inequalities that refugees face across the world today. It focuses on three main areas: labour market inequality, health inequality and a lack of legal representation. This briefing section gives an overview of the current situation of refugees across these three main areas, before proceeding to give more detailed insights. 07 Read the report > of refugees are hosted in just 5 countries, with Turkey hosting the most (3.7 million) (UNHCR, 2020) + Reports policy Termly Reports: Welcome Warwick Think Tank Reports This year, Warwick Think Tank will be publishing a report every term.
